‘First day as a soccer mom’: Serena Williams turns assistant coach at daughter Olympia’s first football practice

In addition to her impressive list of accomplishments, Serena Williams has recently embraced a new role as a football assistant coach. The 23-time grand slam champion, who recently concluded her singles career at the US Open, had her first taste of being a soccer mom while attending her daughter Olympia’s practice session.

Sharing the experience on Instagram, Serena recounted, “True story: I attended Olympia’s first soccer practice, and she was so nervous that she refused to leave my side. They were in need of volunteers for assistant coaches, so now I find myself taking on that role whenever I can. Clearly, I was not prepared. I initially went to relax but ended up leaving in a state like this. At least I have a @Lincoln to get us to soccer practice! A modern-day soccer mom. Perhaps I’ll reach out to @weareangelcity.”

Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, are among the investors in Angel City FC, the latest expansion team in the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League. Currently, the club holds the eighth position in the 12-team points table after 21 fixtures.

The 2022 US Open marked Serena’s final professional tournament, concluding a remarkable 27-year career that included four Olympic gold medals. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she explained her decision to retire, stating, “I just needed to stop. I always said I wanted to stop when I’m playing really good tennis and winning and beating good players. For me, it’s really about things I want to do spiritually and spending time with my daughter and family.”
