Women’s World Cup: Marta’s record goal puts Brazil on top; Spain, Costa Rica play out 1-1 draw

Vinay, June 10, 2015October 27, 2023

Marta etched her name in history on Tuesday by becoming the all-time leading scorer in the women’s World Cup. Brazil clinched the top spot in Group E with a 2-0 victory over South Korea, where Marta’s second-half penalty marked her 15th career goal in the competition, surpassing the record set by retired German forward Birgit Prinz. Marta’s teammate, Formiga, playing in her sixth World Cup, also made history by becoming the oldest player to score in the tournament, giving Brazil a 1-0 lead in the first half in Montreal. The win propelled Brazil to the top of Group E after an earlier 1-1 draw between Costa Rica and Spain.

In Group F, France secured a 1-0 triumph over England, courtesy of a stellar long-range strike from the swift forward Eugenie Le Sommer in the 29th minute. Le Sommer capitalized on a defensive lapse by Katie Chapman and Laura Bassett to unleash a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

Meanwhile, in the same group, a late 82nd-minute goal from Daniela Montoya salvaged a 1-1 draw for Colombia against Mexico. Montoya’s decisive shot from outside the penalty area denied Mexico their first World Cup victory. Mexico is set to face England in their upcoming match, while Colombia will take on France. Brazil’s next challenge is against Spain, and South Korea aims for their first World Cup win against Costa Rica.
